Psalm 73:1-28

Chapter 73
1 A psalm. To Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to the pure of heart. 2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped, for their blessednesses were poured out like nothing. 3 For I was zealous for the prospering ones; I see the peace of the wicked. 4 For there are no bands in their death, and they are always healthy. 5 They are not in the toil of frail humanity, and they are not touched with Adam. 6 Therefore pride adorns them; violence that they have set wraps them up. 7 His eyes came forth from fatness; their transgressions passed from the lies of the heart. 8 They devour and speak moral evil, oppression; they speak from divine heights. 9 They have drunk to the heavens with their mouth, and their tongue walks in the earth. 10 Therefore his people return here struck and find waters of fullness for them. 11 And they say, "How does God know, and is there knowledge in the Most High?" 12 Behold, these are wicked. God attain power and are at ease—an everlasting covenant. 13 Surely I have purified my heart in vain, and I wash my hands in innocence. 14 And I was plagued all the day, and my rebuke was every morning. 15 If I said, "I will recount like this"—behold, I would have betrayed your generation, your sons. 16 When I thought to know this, it was toil in my eyes. 17 until I came into the sanctuaries of God; then I understood their end. 18 Surely you set them in slippery places; you cast them down into calamities. 19 How they were brought to desolation in a moment! They are finished amid terrors. 20 Like a dream when one awakes, Lord, in the city you will despise their image. 21 For my heart was embittered and my kidneys I sharpened. 22 And I—I was brutish and I did not know; I was like a beast with you. 23 And I am continually with you; you have grasped my right hand. 24 With your counsel you will guide me, and afterward you will take me to glory. 25 Whom do I have in the heavens? And with you I have not delighted in the earth. 26 My flesh and my heart fail, but God is the rock of my heart and my portion forever. 27 For behold, those who are far from you will perish; you have cut off every prostitute from you. 28 But as for me, the nearness of God is good for me. I have placed my refuge in my Lord the LORD, to tell all your works.
